There are some excellent solutions available in the marketplace today to help buildings get more energy efficient and most importantly to every organization, reduce their operating costs. Whether it’s a commercial office building with corporate tenants, a shopping mall with both retail clients and their customers, a large venue with professional sports teams or tradeshow attendees, or a hospital that must maintain both comfort and compliance for patient health reasons, it’s all the same: they must lower their annual spend. And in nearly every case, energy is one of the “big hitters” that can really move that needle quickly for organizations.

It then falls on the building operations/facilities engineering team to execute on those mandates, goals, and challenges to reduce energy . . . therefore reducing cost. However, if they embrace the technology that’s out there to achieve those goals, the concern is that they could be embracing themselves right out of a job – thinking that technology will replace all their valuable work in the facility, making them redundant. Along with that, it doesn’t help that much of the time these same folks are averse to new approaches, new technical solutions, or simply new products to learn and interact with when they are adopted by the powers-that-be. Doesn’t bode well for their argument that their jobs should stay intact when push comes to shove either.

Then there are the managers of facilities or energy and sustainability that have already started down a path to energy efficiency and cost reduction. They have a lot of great plans, maybe some of which have been set in motion. But they are struggling on how to get more out of their building, or more often, how to keep the building at those reduced levels on an ongoing basis every year. So while they, too, could use technology to help them reach their efficiency goals, truth be told, they have begun laying out that path to savings, and would rather not relinquish all of that to some product or outside firm to achieve. This not only takes away their control (which no one prefers), it may also remove their “fingerprint” on the initiatives, making it generic and non-specific to what their own approach might be. This could jeopardize their roles and value in the organization just like the operators mentioned previously.
